FOOTBALL: Rogers uses balanced performance to break through for first win, 47-12 over Whitney

ROGERS – After close losses to Academy and San Saba in their first two games, the Rogers Eagles finally broke through in a big way against Whitney on Friday night at Merk Field.

Freshman RJ Cook scored touchdowns on an 58-yard interception return and a 10-yard run and junior Riley Dolgener threw TD passes of 12 yards to Ben Hutka and 19 yards to Alex Vargas as Rogers rolled to a 47-12 victory over the Wildcats.

Christian Riley produced 105 of the Eagles' 303 rushing yards. Rogers (1-2) got a 32-yard touchdown run from Christian Watkins, Logan Hare's 3-yard TD rush and John Hill's 2-yard scoring run.

Dolgener was 8-of-11 passing for 101 yards and the two touchdowns as coach Charlie Roten's Eagles compiled 404 yards total offense.

Whitney (1-2), which hammered Robinson 41-0 a week earlier, got 226 passing yards and a touchdown from Garrett Peacock, who also had a TD run but threw interceptions to Cook, Riley and Gavin Bennett.

Julian Lashbrook kicked five extra points for Rogers, which was led defensively by six tackles each from seniors Hill and Jayce Jones.

The Eagles play at West (2-1) at 7:30 p.m. next Friday, then begin their District 13-3A Division II schedule Sept. 25 at Buffalo.
